Actually, I like the Histories even better, even though they are just a collection of his notes and the commentary by his son, Christopher.
Overall, he's my favorite author because he created an entire world, weaving together the roots of lesser-known myths of Europe, inventing languages and writing systems, and doing it all with such a sense of wonder, beauty, and the reality of the depths of pain and evil as well as magic. There is a lot of wisdom in the books, and characters both common and larger than life. Tolkien set out to create an epic mythology for England, and he did.

M$Robin Cook - best book "Chromosome 6" - These are medical thrillers that really make you stop and think about what could be in the medical world.
Michael Crichton - best book "Andromeda Strain" - As the author of amazing novels that have been turned into movies (Jurassic park, Sphere, Congo, etc) and TV shows such as ER, Michael Crichton is just an amazing man.
David Sedaris - best book "Me Talk Pretty One Day" - one of the funniest authors you will ever read and extremely informative as well.
Mark Leyner - best book "Why do Men Have Nipples" - if you need a book that will make you laugh and actually give you bits of knowledge this is the book to find.
Gary Paulsen - best book "Hatchet" (or any of the Hatchet/Brian series) - one of my favorite books as a kid, I still go back and read them every so often.
I could go on and on here (haven't even come close to going into non-fiction yet).

M$I'm slightly confused at the moment. I selected your answer as the "Best Answer," however it is not showing up as the best answer. I'll tip you $1 at the moment and send the support team an email.
You have to read "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim"... I would put it up there with "Me Talk Pretty One Day"
Love David Sedaris. I've read "Me Talk Pretty One Day," "Holidays on Ice," and "When You Are Engulfed in Flames"

M$It's a wonderful satire. The letters give advice from a senior demon to his nephew, who needs all the help he can get in his business of stealing souls.
The actual advice, of course, is to you the reader.

I learn about myself and the behaviors of others by reading this book. That is why it is one of my favorites.

My favorite author of the moment is Terry Goodkind. You must start with "Wizard's First Rule."

M$When I clicked on this question, I said to myself: "Someone is going to put Twilight"
Lol, and here you are.
I personally like the book series, but have grown to dislike it a bit after the movie was made. In my opinion, GOOD books shouldn't be made into movies, because in most cases they screw them up.
Another is Barbara Kingsolver, and while I love her fiction my favorite book of hers right now is /Animal, Vegetable, Miracle/.
When it comes to kid's book, CS Lewis's /Chronicles of Narnia/ will always have a special place in my heart.
However, today, my favorite author is JRR Tolkien and my favorite book is /The Return of the King/. Unbelievably, I just finished his trilogy at age 22. I love it. This book features my favorite ending to a book ever. It's just so complete.
Wikipedia to make sure I had the right title for the book I was thinking of. :)

M$In recent times, Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon + the Baroque series. Those were just pure pleasure to read. I didn't want them to end, and for a long time, they didn't.
But Miller was just the master. As Lawrence Durrell said, the master in any age. Miller was more than just a writer, he was a guru. His books are psychoactive. They change the cells of the reader. They rewrite your DNA! His message, live absolutely! That's the way to "enlightenment."
The books in my life.

Tad Williams: The War of the Flowers, the Shadowmarch trilogy, and the Otherland series.

M$I don't want to sound vain but here I go, vain shall I be. I studied a bunch of literary theory at school and have read more than 1000 books in my life, maybe around 1500 already (I'm 29 and don't really count them). If that doesn't make you picky with who you think is your favorite author, what does?
My prediction is that he, Paul Auster, will win the Nobel Prize, because he's younger than Philip Roth (you read it here first), who's my other US choice.
For my other predictions, read this answer:

For Paul Auster material, walk to the nearest bookstore or library and grab "Moon Palace".
P. S. Don't thank me. Thank Paul Auster.
I'm a vain have read more than 1000 books kinda reader.

M$"Transfer of Power" was the first of the Mitch Rapp series that I read and definitely not my last...Fast paced and engrossing from the very first second...If you love the tv series 24, give Flynn's books a try...you too will be hooked! Mitch Rapp is a likable character that you will root for the entire time...he spends all his time saving the country...In Transfer of Power, it is Mitch who needs to save the White House from being taken over by terrorists...his mission is to free the hostages and save the president, all without getting caught...this book is a thriller from the first page to the last...If you read this, I promise it won't be your last Flynn book!

M$You may have heard of "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" (forget the awful movie that was made). It was funny, romantic, brought in a lot of social issues and all that about a woman whose thumb was so huge she could make anything stop on a roadside by waving it. If that isn't talent (Robbins I mean) I don't know what is.

M$He wrote books for kids and young adults that are extremely exciting and fun to read, and that anyone under 80 years old would still find enjoyment reading.
Some of the more famous books he wrote - Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda. I also liked "the Twits" a lot :)

M$He was a very lonely man, even when surrounded by his friends, and - even born in the 1880s - he now epitomizes the spirit of the modern man, surrounded by techonology but ultimately alone and vulnerable.
My favorite book by him is called "Book of Disquiet". It is a wonderful, incoherent book made of quotes, thoughts, essays, and so many different but always compelling texts that make you think, reflect about your own life and the life of those around you. I love it because it is the kind of book you can always come back to and find something new for many many years. I strongly recommend it.

M$Despite the title character's selfish behavior and tendencies toward immorality, you find yourself pulling for her - especially since, as the reader, you know the backstory that makes the central love story (note, NOT between Amber and the king) so heartbreakingly tragic.
This book epitomizes historical romance (but with enough grisly details of the plague outbreak to satisfy less romance hungry readers).

M$On a lighter vein, try Clive Cussler for pure fun with a bit of historical fiction thrown in for kicks. His lead character, Dirk Pitt, is a Saturday matinee in print. Picture Indiana Jones in the water. Lots of fun to read.
