The Academy Awards, otherwise more commonly and affectionately known as the Oscars, were first held in 1929 to recognize the achievements of professionals in the film industry such as directors, special effects workers and set designers. 2011 marks the 83rd year that the Oscars were held in the United States.
The first Oscar for Best Actor was given out to Emil Jennings (1884 – 1950) for two films; The Last Command (1927) and The Way of All Flesh (1928). He was a German actor and made a total of 79 films in his career. Most, if not all of them were silent films with German intertitles. The two films which earned him an Oscar were both silent films as well but had English intertitles. Jennings earned an Oscar for two films because the nomination system back then were honored for work done in a particular period of time. As such, Jennings could be nominated for both films in a single award category. The award rules changed from the fourth ceremony onwards where professionals were given awards for only a specific performance in a specific, single film.
