Who will sign my petition to change the way barometric pressure is reported (from INCHES to PSI) ?
I realize it's the height a column of mercury rises to, but c'mon!
How about Pounds per Square Inch or something that makes sense?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The international standard for pressure is the Pascal (Pa), formerly the Newton/m^2 (Newton per square meter). That's the force force required to accelerate one kilogram by one meter per second per second (kg/m·s2)
Atmospheres (atm) are used for barometric pressure. Seems more intuitive to me. At 18,000 feet, there is 1/2 atm. Explains why it's hard to breathe.
At 27,480 ft, there's only 1/3 atmosphere. Explains why most Mt. Everest climbers carry oxygen bottles.
But, you'd have to get the world to agree....and that never happens. There are still people who don't believe the world is round. Go figure.
