Who will replace Steve Jobs as head of Apple?

Tip for best answer: M$5.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Tim Cook:

* He stood in for Steve when he had pancreatic cancer surgery
* He's responsible for their amazing supply chain, inventory etc, which people forget is a key part of their profitability
* He played a big part in the last keynote - a way of introducing him to the press and public; Schiller and Ive were there for other reasons.
* It's a mistake to try and replace Steve Jobs - you can't. Apple has a lot of talent (Ive for example) that can continue the work; instead they need a smart guy to oversee them. Schiller can dance around on stage at keynotes. In any case Apple is likely rethinking the way they introduce new products.

Steve Jobs could well become chairman and consult on products to ease the transition and investors fears.

CNN Money has a good summary of Cook:

He may not have the CEO experience, but Jonathan Ive, lead designer at apple is responsible for all major products for the last decade. I imagine he's had the 'Steve Jobs' vision firmly impressed on himself.

Just a thought.

Steve Jobs actually did leave once. He left to found NeXT, whose operating system, NeXTSTEP, evolved into OpenSTEP, which later evolved into Mac OS X. He came back, though, when his first company bought out his second.

The next ranking officer is Tim Cook.

I personally think they should start talking more to Steve Wozniak.

Scott Forstall. Seems to be the most "Steve-like". Did a great job at WWDC 2008.

Tim Cook, most likely. What he lacks in design and aesthetic he can make up by surrounding himself with people like Jony Ive, just as Steve surrounded himself with people like Cook who knew business back and forth. A lot of Apple's current success can be attributed to Cook.

Eric Schmidt will leave Google to go head Apple. By the time Steve has retired Google will have reached a point where it is no longer feasible to grow and innovate.

You figure? As Google shifts into more and more into hardware, you could say that their turf will overlap with Apple's. Although they might run out of market growth a few years, it is about as likely that Google will hit a plateau as it is for Apple to stop innovating.

Right now Steve Jobs is the innovator and marketing guy. His ideas get pushed on the hardware side and his sales pitch is what most people would look to for new products. When he leaves they will have to go with a different approach which would be a research and dev team that would have a person like Philip Schiller as the company's person to pitch the idea. He may be the face that Apple will need to show the world as new products arrive.

Jonathan Ive, Apple's senior vp of industrial design, is a possibility, should Steve Jobs leave Apple, which I doubt he will in the near future.

As a designer, I'd like to see this... but I'd be willing to be it'll be current COO Tim Cook.

Ive wouldn't want to the job - as a designer (and that's what he is), what better Job to have than his current gig? I seriously doubt he'd want to swap designing Apple's products to have constant meetings and conference calls about retail numbers, forecasts, iTunes Store or whatever…

Apple wouldn't give Ive the job - it would be very risky. Apple isn't just about its industrial design. Ive doesn't know software for instance - it's not like he designed OS X's UI.

I do not think that Apple will replace Steve Jobs anytime seen. Previous rumors of Steve Jobs' retirement and or sickness (even one false report about his death) have made Apple's stock prices plummet. They will slowly remove him from the limelight until he has too little attention to cause problems when he is replaced.

Steve Jobs will never be replaced. Apple will have already hired a lookalike in the event of his death, and through a vast conspiracy of fraud and deception, he will live on just as in the case of Kim Jong Il, the Great Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

In all seriousness though, it is likely that Jonathan Ive will replace Steve Jobs, having been the third most notorious name associated with Apple. Steve Wozniak, being the second, is not likely to want Steve's position, being that any comparison between the two Steve's is unjust to each of them -- Jobs has always been a visionary, and Wozniak was always a counterpart in the early days of Apple.

No one. After him, there will be no Apple. They'll have to change the name just to stay in business. Apple is the product of one man's vision. Always has been, and always will be.
