Illana mentions that there are six candidates left. The uncrossed names in the cave were Sawyer, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, and Kwon (which could be either Sun or Jin or both). If Kwon refers to both Sun and Jin, than those are your six. But if it only refers to one of them, then there is still someone else who has yet to be mentioned.
So based on the above names, Sayid is out because he's "possessed", Sawyer is out because he has taken sides with Locke/Man in Black, I don't see that either Sun or Jin would stay to protect the island since their child is off the island and they would want to stay together as a family. So that leaves Jack and Hurley. So between those two I would go with Jack because he has always taken a leadership role on the island.

Yeah, I know that Locke was a candidate, but in Season 6 Episode 7, Alana tells Sun that there are only six candidates left. This is well after she knew that Locke was already dead. So I don't think she was counting Locke as one of the six that were left.
And I agree with you about Jack - I don't really care for him either. And it might be too predictable for Jack to end up being the candidate. But at this point, that's where I'm leaning to.

The numbers were
4-Locke,
8-Reyes,
15-Ford,
16-Jarrah
23-Shephard,
42-Kwon
Those are the 6. If you are counting Locke as now ineligible (since he's dead), there are only 5 left. They don't know if it's Sun or Jin but it's not both or they would be listed twice.
I wonder why Kate isn't on the list? I'm almost wondering if it's actually her, and the numbers are like- people that have to be removed or something. The island could have took Claire so that Kate would take Aaron, which was her test to see if she was a good protector.
I don't want it to be Jack. He's a bit of an idiot. Hurley would be awesome though. Also, Hurley is set to be the main character in one of the last episodes, so it could possibly be him. There is also the "8 of 14" rumor to take into account.
They just finished filming this week, but I bet they did it in such a way that no one really knows who dies (filming extra scenes, for example - like they did in the OC). Matthew fox is the only one that's read the entire script. Who knows!
