Let's take a look at the candidates for starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers

1. Hunter Cantwell
2. Jimmy Clausen
3. Matt Moore
4. Tony Pike

Hunter Cantwell was a member of the Panthers practice squad in 2009. During college he started 16 games, threw for 3,912 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Jimmy Clausen was selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft. During his career at Notre Dame he 8,148 yards and 60 touchdowns.

Matt Moore enters his fourth season in the NFL. He has played in 16 games with the Panthers, thrown for 1,783 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Tony Pike was selected in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft. In college he passed for 5,018 yards and 49 touchdowns.

Looking over the list of quarterbacks, I think it's almost certain the Claussen was drafted to be the starting quarterback and if he doesn't progress enough to be that to start the season, Moore will be the man to step in until Clausen is ready. Moore is the only quarterback on the roster with any NFL experience at all. As for the third quarterback between Tony Pike and Hunter Cantwell, I think Pike has the inside track for that roster spot.

I know there are quite a few people who think that Jimmy Claussen was drafted to be the Carolina Panthers quarterback of the future, and because the Panthers were so bad last year, most will say the Panthers should hand the job over to Claussen right away. The New York Jets, and Detroit Lions did it last year and there are more teams that might turn their signal calling over to a rookie quarterback like the St. Louis Rams with Sam Bradford.

Still if the Panthers want to have a chance to compete for a playoff spot, and they have the talent to do so; then they should start Matt Moore. When Moore was handed the job towards the end of last year, all he did was throw touchdowns and win games. Moore started the last five games of the regular season last year, and while winning four of those games, including a season ending 23-10 victory over the Saints, he threw eight touchdowns and just two interceptions while completing 61 percent of his passes and accumulating 1,053 yards through the air.

Matt Moore should be the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers in 2010

The Carolina Panthers have a chance at a good season if they can get consistent offense. Since none of their quarterbacks really have much experience, I believe it is an open competition. What will probably happen is that the Panthers will initially open camp with Jimmy Clausen as the number three QB all the time hoping that he shows enough to win the starting position. If he fails to grab the reins right off the bat, they will name Matt Moore the starting quarterback. The depth chart will list Tony Pike at number 4 and Hunter Cantwell at 3. Moore will run the team for the first three or four games and if he they are inning may hold onto the job. Rest assured that if he falters in the least, and Clausen has shown anything at all, he will be moved behind center quickly. The only way Clausen will not wind up by year end as the starting QB, is if Matt Moore is just superb. You can bet your bottom dollar that the team is hoping Jimmy has a great exhibition season and in the eyes of the coaches wins the starting job outright.
