Who/what should have been nominated but wasn't for an Oscar?
Personally I would have liked to see Wall-E and Dark Knight up for best picture, instead of "The Reader" which I've never even heard of

I agree 100% that WALL-E should be a best picture nomination, but the Oscars have a very long history of completely snubbing and disregarding animated films. People will argue that the inclusion of the Best Animated feature category shows that the Oscars have made progress to include animated film, but in all honesty it's just an excuse to exclude them from the other leading categories.
I think that The Dark Knight deserves a best film nomination as well. Maybe not to win, but at least a nomination.
Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely hilarious in Tropic Thunder, but honestly I don't think he deserves the best supporting actor nomination. (Which if Heath Ledger doesn't win, it will be an absolute shame!) His role in Ironman was a really great depiction of Tony Stark. I kind of wish that he was up for best actor for Ironman instead.
One thing I am glad about is that Nerakhoon (The Betrayal) was nominated for best documentary. I really wanted to see the film, but it was not released where I live. Sometimes snagging an Oscar prompts smaller films to do a wider release after the awards, which I'm really pulling for!
Finally, since I work in the animation/video games/CGI industry, I have to make underhanded comments about the effects awards, lol.
No complaints about the best animated picture choices - they're all good films. But WALL-E will win, hands down.
Hellboy should get the makeup ocsar. The movie isn't amazing, but the makeup is outstanding, better than Pan's Labyrinth.
And even though the movie bombed, I'd kind of like to see Speed Racer included in the Visual effects category. The visuals are...just insane, unlike any movie I've ever seen. I think "trippy" describes it best. But the other nominations for the category are worthy too, I wouldn't knock any of them off the list.

Really, I'd like to see Alan Rickman get something for Bottle Shock, but it's almost impossible for a character part to win best actor. Watching him eat fried chicken for ten seconds was a much more moving experience than anything Heath Ledger did in Batman.
I wanted to see Max Payne, W, and Synechdoche, NY this year, but I didn't get to... does anyone know if they're any good?

M$I've said for the last couple of years that the Academy is moving towards irrelevance very quickly. They continue down that path this year. Good work Academy!
