The September Six were six Mormons who were excommunicated or dis-fellowshipped by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in September 1993 for speaking against Church doctrine and leadership. The term "September Six" was coined by the The Salt Lake Tribune and used extensively in the media.

The "September Six" are:

Whitesides was the first of the group to experience church discipline. She was dis-fellowshipped September 14, 1993, though technically still a member.

The other five were all excommunicated. Anderson still attends services as a non-member and Quinn still views himself as a Ladder Day Saint. Gileadi has been reborn and is an active LDS.

Hanks "pursued Gnosticism", Toscano's wife was also excommunicated 7 years later, and Whitesides is technically still a member having only been dis-fellowshipped, but has become active in Native American philosophies.

The September Six, three men and three women who were "disfellowshipped" (described by one of the Six as a kind of excommunication) from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Septemeber 13, 1993. Only one of them has been re-baptized and fully returned to the Mormon faith. One of the six remains disfellowshipped, retaining membership in the Church. The remaining four have been fully excommunicated. All six of themembers shared one thing, a growing disenchantment with some aspect of Mormon theology and culture (i.e. the status of women and/or lesbian and gay people, the offical "history" of the church and denial of its magical and folkloristic influences, Mormon anti-intellectualism, power exclusivity in the hands of a few select, male leaders, etc). The Six are individually still active researching, ariting, and/or speaking about the Church and Mormon theology, history, politics, and/or culture.
