Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons were physicists who announced ,on March 23 1989, the experimental production of "N-Fusion" (labelled by the media as cold fusion), something that was previously thought to be unattainable. After a short period of excitement in the press, hundreds of scientists were unable to reproduce the effects described by Fleischmann and Pons.
The two scientists have subsequently been accused of being unethical, sloppy and even fraudulent. They are often used as an example of inappropriate and unproductive representation of science in the popular press.
