The Tudors were the royal dynasty that ruled England and Wales between the victory of Henry VII over Richard III at the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 and the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. They were preceded by the Plantagenats and followed by the Stuarts. The monarchs in the dynasty were Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth.
James I (also James VI of Scotland) was the great-grandson of Henry VII's sister Margaret. His accession (arranged by negotiation with the childless Elizabeth) ended the Tudor dynasty and began the Stuart line.
James I, like most monarchs of his period, believed in the Divine Right of Kings to absolute power. His son, Charles I, would push this to the limit and lose his head and throne over it.
I do not see any historical precedents set by the Roman Empire with regards to James' accession. In fact, unlike the "might is right" typical change of Roman Emperor, the change in dynasty from Tudor to Stuart was handled diplomatically and with Parliament in agreement.
