Sitting presidents have been discouraged from using email to communicate while in office due to security concerns--and out of legal concerns. Most Presidents in the technological age have feared that emails could be subject to subpoenas from Congress.
But Pres. Obama finally convinced White House officials to allow email exchanges between personal friends/family and only his closest advisers.
Just to be clear, other presidents (including Bush Jr., and Clinton) did use email out of office, just never as President.
