Who was the first to say it was a privilege to sit around all day and do nothing?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I cannot find anything with "privilege and day" other day the following quote:

If I don't feel like writing today or for a few days, I don't. And I don't think about it. It is not an obligation-it is the greatest privilege.

On the other hand, there are lots of quotes about the value of leisure:

They talk of the dignity of work. The dignity is in leisure.

Herman Melville
American, Novelist Quotes

A broad margin of leisure is as beautiful in a man's life as in a book. Haste makes waste, no less in life than in housekeeping. Keep the time, observe the hours of the universe, not of the cars. What are threescore years and ten hurriedly and coarsely lived to moments of divine leisure in which your life is coincident with the life of the universe?

Henry David Thoreau
1817-1862, American Essayist, Poet, Naturalist
-----

If you are losing your leisure, look out! You are losing your soul.

Logan Pearsall Smith
1865-1946, Anglo-American Essayist, Aphorist

AND, last but not least, perhaps the oldest quote:

He does not seem to me to be a free man who does not sometimes do nothing.

Marcus T. Cicero
c. 106-43 BC, Great Roman Orator, Politician
