This question is very subjective but I believe it was Elvis. He was the first real entertainer to push the boundaries of rock music by incorporating a hybrid, blues, soul and sexuality, which I think truly pushed him over top. Most people also give him credit for starting a counter culture music due to most parents that his music inappropriate for the time. He was the first rock entertainer to make an insane amount of money selling records and shows. He also had fame that would last the test of time today, Elvis memorabilia still brings top dollars at auction houses and his music still has a following.
