The first Indian to win an Oscar is Bhanu Athaiya. She was awarded for the Best Costume Designer for the film Gandhi in 1982. She has been associated with the Hindi Film Industry for more than 50 years and was born as Bhanumati Annasaheb Rajopadhye in Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
She has worked on more than 100 films with noted filmmakers like Guru Dutt, Yash, Chopra, Kapoor] and international directors like Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough of Gandhi.
She had her film debut as a costume designer in the movie C.I.D. in 1956. In her 50 years as being a costume designer she received a lot of awards. Aside from the Academy Award she also won two National Film Awards in 1991 and 2002.
