Bell Helmets apparently introduced the first PROTECTIVE helmets in 1955:
Bell Racing, Inc., the company that invented the first protective helmets for auto racing, is pleased to announce that 2005 will mark the 50th year that a Bell helmet has been worn in competition at the Indianapolis 500.
The first Bell helmet used during the Indianapolis 500 was worn by Cal Niday in 1955.
From their website...
Cal Niday becomes the first driver to wear a Bell Helmet in the Indy 500. On the 170th lap, Niday crashes hard into a wall. He credits the helmet with saving him from more serious injury.
However, according to the Autocourse Official History of the Indy 500, Eddie Rickenbacker actually wore a type of helmet as early as 1916.
Indy.com concurs with this and adds a second name:
May 30, 1916 —Eddie Rickenbacker and Peter Henderson are the first to wear steel helmets in the 500.
I suppose Bell is taking credit for advancing safety in racing, as they continue to be a huge sponsor of several drivers.
