M$I know, most people think George Washngton was the first president, and John Adams was the second. However, the first president of the United States was actually John Hanson. Six other presidents were elected after him - Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788) - all prior to Washington taking office. Why are these Presidents never mentioned? They were elected under the Articles of Confederation, which didn't work well. So they wrote a new doctrine needed known as the Constitution. George Washington was the first president under the Constitution.
I should note that some claim he was only "President of Congress" but at the time there was no executive office. So, he was the only president of the United States.
