Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Elias Boudinot--he served one year 1783.

I know, most people think George Washngton was the first president, and John Adams was the second. However, the first president of the United States was actually John Hanson. Six other presidents were elected after him - Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788) - all prior to Washington taking office. Why are these Presidents never mentioned? They were elected under the Articles of Confederation, which didn't work well. So they wrote a new doctrine needed known as the Constitution. George Washington was the first president under the Constitution.

I should note that some claim he was only "President of Congress" but at the time there was no executive office. So, he was the only president of the United States.

George Washington had two terms, but John Adams was the second president. He wasn't "in power"--that's for dictators and kings. Presidents traditionally "serve in office".

John Adams was in office for one term of four years, 1797-1801.
