I once read that Mussolini was a great admirer of ancient Roman Emperors like Julius Caesar, and that his aggressive, expansionist foreign policy was in many ways an attempt to create a new "Roman Empire".

According to Mussolini's wikipedia page, he was also influenced by the writings of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, the sociologist Vilfredo Pareto , the Marxist Charles Peguy, and the "syndicalists" Georges Sorel and Hupert Garadelle.
