Who thinks this might be a good idea? Little badges on our profiles to let people know what our activities are on Mahalo!

I just sort of picture little "role" badges for QCers, Buzz team members, How To member, staff, VMs and anything else defining. What do you think? Wouldn't it be clearer to all if our profiles showed what we were involved in and what our experiences were? Here are some ideas!

Tip for best answer: M$1.45
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This is an excellent idea, and has been proposed several times to staff. Hopefully at some point it will make it high enough on the list for the devs to implement it. Given the low cost (read "free") to Mahalo, badges on members' pages can be a great way to show members' accomplishments on Mahalo without any cost to Mahalo. Some ideas for badges:

1. Over X answers provided (bronze = 200, silver = 1000, gold = 2000, platinum = 3000)
2. Over X Best Answer Provided (bronze = 100, silver = 500, gold = 1000, platinum = 1500)
3. Most points gained in one month
4. Most points gained in one year
5. Most pages built in one month
6. Most pages built in one year
7. Over M$X page management revenue (bronze = M$100, silver = M$500, gold = M$1000, platinum = M$5000)
8. Over M$X vertical management revenue (bronze = M$200, silver = M$1000, gold = M$2000, platinum = M$10,000)
9. Top Best Answers members (bronze = top 100, silver = top 50, gold = top 25, platinum = top 10)
10. Top Answers provided members (bronze = top 100, silver = top 50, gold = top 25, platinum = top 10)
11. Vertical Manager (badge with names of categories)
12. Answer of the Day/Week/Month/Year winner/runner-up (bronze = 3rd place, silver = 2nd place, gold = 1st place)

Etc. etc. etc. - the sky's the limit.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I agree that this is an excellent idea! I think that would be a lot of fun and maybe even a bit motivating to strive to answer all kinds of questions...

Hey Opher! Top quality answer there buddy, and I couldn't agree with you more. Badges are one of the "easier" fixes I'd love to see implemented soon. Ideally, clicking on a "VM" badge would take you to a leaderboard of our VM's, sortable by "most VM'ed pages, date account created, etc etc". Those leaderboards are currently in development, and will tie in nicely with many of the badges you recommended. Great suggestion all around, and I look forward to putting many of these into place!

Best,
Corey Mac

What a great idea @opher - you did forget one very important category, and one that I'm sure I would hold permanently.

We have a bunch of clean up work (refactoring) to do right now, as well as more servers to put in, before we get to badges.

However, this is on the roadmap and there will be a bunch of them that are fun, silly and informative like you've described above.

Badges will be a fun reward system and a way to see who else is in your orbit (i.e. if you and another person have the PET badge for answering 25 questions about cats).

Nice job!

I like this idea about the badges regarding the role of a member in the community. Also I think this can be the only way a newbie can find out the suitable person for clearing his doubts, because I don't remember any other place listing the staff, how to members and VMs seperately.

Great suggestion @ritzy !

EDIT ~ I can see the images now. :)

I like this idea. Also would especially like it if staff members were somehow clearly identified by something on their avatars...

ghanan, I also dont know of another site where the staff actually get involved in the day to day chit chat and generally get involved with a site, as much as they do on Mahalo. Also I wasnt thinking of the listings being a separate thing, I see some people having two, or even three, little badges. Eg. A How To team member, who also does QC and gets involved in Buzz would have three badges, do you see what I mean?

Thanks for confirming that the images show occasionally, I think Mahalo is having problems with pics right now, so hopefully this will sort itself out.

I like the idea. Nice logos too! Having badges would help let others know what each user does as well as let them know what a user has accomplished on Mahalo. I think the badges could motivate users to reach certain goals and could increase overall participation on the site.

I think this would be a good idea. I like the widget provided - http://www.mahalo.com/answers/widgets , but I do think it would be great to show a "role" as you speak about. This would show others our "level of expertise" in our areas.

Great question!

Mahalo has been having some issues re: hosting with Flickr lately. While we get these issues resolved, we suggest using a different image hosting solution (skitch, picasa etc). I have fixed the original image (in the question) so it should be working now!

Thank you. I just want to ask, can you see an image of three badges beneath the question? I put them there, but they are not showing to me right now. I will try to show them here. Let me know if they are visible to you.

We achieve new "belt" levels, which is a bitty bit silly - don't get me wrong! I'm working my butt off for my brown tip. That sounds wrong, somehow...

It would be so good to know that if a Mahalo candidate achieves brown then black belt, he or she is recognized for a well-rounded contribution to the overall community. This is an excellent idea. I don't care if it is not a new idea. We need to keep presenting ideas to let the Powers that Be understand that a good idea is a good idea.

Ritzy, thank you so much for not only a well-rounded plan, but some excellent logos!

I am all for this idea! I think it would make things a little more fun. Yeah we work towards belts but doing special tasks and having a fun little acknowledgment like a badge would be awesome! I also think it would be a bit motivating to for users to become more active in tasks or how-to.

I love this idea! It'll be cool to know what other people has accomplished. It also helps us to know who are the person in charge of something, such as staffs and VMs.

This is a great idea. I always like achieving a new marker. I use the Glue toolbar from AdaptiveBlue in Firefox to 'Like' my favorite Mahalo topics. The Glue reward is virtual stickers and 'Guru' status of things I comment on most.

Topical badges also help build community as we see similarities with other members more easily.
