Who should I take with the first pick of my fantasy football draft?

I am preparing for my league's fantasy football draft and I have the first pick. Many experts have been saying to take either Chris Johnson or Adrian Peterson with the first pick, but I am unsure of which one to take. My league uses PPR scoring and is not a keeper league.

The general rule of thumb is to try your best to take a top running back as your first selection. Assuming your league has 12 managers, which is about the norm, depending on your draft position, this may or may not be an option. Draft order has a lot to do with it, as there are not really 12 top running backs available. My strategy is to pick a top running back if I am in the first six selections or a top quarterback if I select later. Adrian Peterson is easily my first pick, though I cannot stand Grandpa Favre, Peterson is one of the best ever at his position.

Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice are all right up there with Peterson, but this season I would expect Peterson to shine through more than in previous years, likely to make up for Favre's inability to make big plays when it counts. Picking later in the round, Drew Brees would be a great pick, as would Aaron Rodgers or my future ex-husband Tom Brady.
