Who pioneered hip hop music in the U.S.?
Hip hop music is undoubtedly gaining fans in the U.S. and around the world. I know that rapping is just a part of it but my knowledge is limited to this. I am interested to know how hip hop came about. Who was the first to coined the term "hip hop"? What is the root of hip hop music? Aside from hip hop in the U.S., are there hip hop music in other countries as well?

Who was first to coined the word hip hop? Wow, I never really thought about who first started using the word, just thought when rap came on the scene it was just there ya know, LOL. But I was wrong. And actually this was harder to pin down than I thought. I was able to find a hip hop timeline but it didn't really answer the question of who first coined the word. Many areas just gave the meaning of rap: The cultural context of rap music found in the urban style of dress, speech and art.
Finally found that Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was credited with coining the term hip hop in 1978 while teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers. Cowboy later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance. The name was originally meant as a sign of disrespect, but soon came to identify this new music and culture.
What is the root of hip hop music? Hip hop music originated in 1970s block parties in New York City, specifically The Bronx. Hip hop culture, including MCing, DJing, graffiti and b-boying. In the 1930s more than a sixth of Harlem residents were from the West Indies, and the block parties of the '80s were closely similar to sound systems in Jamaica. "Rappers Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang is the first song that was recorded & released by a hip hop crew, and therefore is considered the first true hip hop release.
Are there hip hop music in other countries as well? Most definitely. Hip hop surrounds the globe and knows no boundaries and does not discriminate. Used to be only prevalent in the African-American culture, hip hop music is popular now in the UK, Hispanic culture, Arabic, China and other countries. There are many groups from other countries who rap in their own language. It is amazing how hip hop has expanded the globe and gaining momentum by breaking down barriers and joining cultures.

Kool DJ Herc brought the sound which would be known as hip hop from Jamaica to the US. Eventually you would have the classic rap acts like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, Lady B, and Run DMC.
