Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am not Hawaiian, but I've been to Hawaii a bunch of times and I love it so much my wife and I got married in Kauai at the Na Aina Kai gardens.

When we were on our honeymoon in Hana I as thinking about my next project and was in the middle of negotiating a $75,000 deal for 20.com. That was to be the name of what became Mahalo.

Over a couple of weeks on the islands I started asking questions about various works and their meanings... including Mahalo. I feel in love with the word, as well as Kokua, and started thinking of naming the service one of those three names (20.com, Kokua or Mahalo).

90% of people did not know the meaning of the word Mahalo and 99.99% didn't know the meaning of the word Kokua. After a bunch of soul searching and research (talking to my wife!) I picked the word Mahalo.com.

Why did we pick the word? Well, the spirit I felt in Hawaii is like nothing else I've ever experienced--and I've traveled the world! In fact, I was thinking about opening an office there, but right now that's still just a dream. :-)

I'd like to retire to the islands at some point, I'll be back to Kauai/Maui/one other island this year I'm sure.

Mahalo for asking! Jason

Mahalo nui loa for the answer. To be honest I was hoping that it was someone from here just because I have a scene of pride and hope of island progression when I see locals do something big but I am glad I got an answer from the creator himself. Lets me know your not just someone that writes some scripts and picks a clever name cause it will sell without any care for it.

I like to add another word to lear. "Pono"

And again Mahalo, Kaleo

I think it was a great choice of name Jason, even though most people probably don't know exactly what it means. I had to google to learn more, even though I've been to Hawaii.

In so far as I understand the word, it seems to perfectly capture what you're trying to do with the site and what you're about as a person.

I'd compare it to using the word "Ubuntu". Most people might not know or care what it means, but it meant something to the folks that chose it. And they're helping to propogate the value a little by using the name.

There is another great word from another language that I think you'd like. "Kapwa" is said to be central to the Filipino culture. I've never been there, but from what I've read, I would love to find out more.

As I understand... Jason is NOT from Hawaii, but he has the Spirit of Aloha. In fact, if you study Huna, then you know that EVERYONE is Hawaiian!

I believe Jason named this Mahalo because of the meaning of the word...

I studied with Serge King.

FYI: You are talking to a seventh generation Hawaiian... only I'm Portuguese... and was brought up in California.

I'm not going to get into a debate with you around the culture being exploited. There have been both good and bad things occuring to original Hawaiian culture, but I want to believe that the regrowth and exploration of the Hawaiian beliefs will more easily come out of a loving (read: Aloha) way and not a negative, angry way. I think love honors our ancestors more than anger.

But if you'd like to hold on to your anger and try to become the holder of Hawaiian truth, then you might see all the beliefs disappear.

By the way, I'm glad some of the old ways have disappeared. It wasn't all rainbows and unicorns...

So you study huna and if so, from who? FYI: you are talking to a born and raised Hawaiian here who's seen our culture exploited and many true meanings and teaching twisted, changed and lost.

also, I'm not knocking this site but would like to see stuff like this actually come out from where it originated

I don't have much as in anger, I just cannot offer look all that is around me. I live here day in and day out watching our island, Molokai, change quicker by the day in a community unwanted uncontrolled way. There are those here that fight with anger and I am not one of those. I just wish I could see our culture benefit the people here more than outsiders. It's a wish. I'd like to see this place grow and still be able to hold onto what we truly are and at the same time, have it remain in our control. It's not anger, it's just that there is now a trust factor that many hold in there hearts.

In fact, they are not in Hawaii! Mahalo is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. I also believe the meaning of the word Mahalo, which means "Thank You" is the reasoning behind Jason calling it this, but likewise it is a catchy word, so much anyone would enter Mahalo and get to this site.

Funny note about the word Mahalo.... Many tourist that visit our islands had believed it to mean "trash" because that was the signs on all the trash bins around Honolulu. Also the way to reply to Mahalo is Aole Pilikia as is No worries No problem.
