Who is your favorite Scifi or Fantasy author?

Scifi and Fantasy novels are a big hit right now. There seems to be a new author every couple of months. There have been a lot of new Scifi series released in th last couple of years, especially vampire based series. With so many new authors to choose from, I am interested to know who everyone thinks is the best. Please share who your favorite is (it can be a new author or a classic one) and why.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My favorite Sci-Fi writer is Arthur C. Clark.

For me, Clarke was a true king of hard science fiction. what I like the most about him was the fact that not only was he a great writer, but he was a master in the traditional scholarly fields as well. He received degrees in both mathematics and physics from King’s College in London. And his books always incorporated elements of true, hardcore science. Clarke’s first great work was 1953’s “Childhood’s End” which actually was not very commercially successful. Yet he would eventually take the Sci-Fi world by storm with 1968’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Spanning eons, the film was built on themes of human evolution, space travel, and the perils of artificial intelligence. In 1972 he wrote“Rendezvous with Rama” which was so great that it was assigned in the AP English class across the US. It is the story of massive alien spaceship that enter Earth’s solar system and the eventual exploration of the ship, exploring the Alien view of our world. The book won both the Hugo and Nebula awards for best novel, also as did 1979’s “The Fountains of Paradise”. Clarke would go on to write three sequels to Odyssey and three sequels to Rama. It’s difficult to assign just how much influence Clarke had on our world. You can trace almost any disastrous encounter with artificial intelligence and first contact with aliens, back to his works. In 1987, the Arthur C. Clarke Award was established in his name! In 2005, the Sir Arthur C. Clarke Award was established for notable contributions in space exploration. Many, including me, consider him the greatest science fiction writer of all time.
