Who is your all-time most beloved Baseball player?

This goes back indefinitely...nobody is off limits. Please give a strong reason as to why said player is so near and dear to your heart. It doesn't have to be Babe Ruth or Cal Ripken Jr. It can be a role player like Shawon Dunston, or Chris Sabo, just because you met him and gave you his autograph, or you thought he was a really nice guy. Whatever the reason may be, please feel free to share. Thanks for answering my question!

My answer...is Brooks Robinson. I was named after him (middle name), and I met him when I was 10 years old. I still remember shaking his hand...

"Well hey there little feller!"

Mine was Steve Garvey. I like that he and the Los Angeles Dodgers got the job done without a lot of flash. I can’t even remember when I first started liking him, but I do remember having that hero kind of thing going on. The rest of North Carolina were either Oakland A’s fans or New York Yankee fans once Catfish Hunter moved there. Baseball seemed different then, but maybe it was my naiveté.

I thought baseball players were special, and Steve Garvey was a special character almost like Super Man. It was only after I was older when it came out about the 3 kids Steve Garvey had with 3 different women other than his wife that I realized it was wrong to put faith in human beings. We are just too flawed. I was already starting to realize that all on my own, but I will always remember Steve when I hear stories about how wonderful someone is suppose to be. I am sure some kids today will learn that from Tiger Woods. I have a fondness of Garvey today because of the lesson.

A lesson you can remember is more important that any misguided idle worship

I have two favorite players of all time, first is Jim Eisenreich. Not a household name for many people, but Eisenreich is such a humble person who overcame Tourette's Syndrome to become a vital part of the Philadelphia Phillies during their 1993 National League Championship season. While with the Phillies he was always a fan favorite and never understood why they loved him so much. Typical of Eisenrich and his humbleness. When he left the Phillies following the 1996 season, he played for the Marlins and Dodgers. I remember his first appearance in Philadelphia as a Marlin. He received a standing ovation that matched the biggest ovations I have ever heard for any player in Philadelphia. He is truly a class act and excellent role playing outfielder and hitter.

My second all time favorite is Mike Schmidt, Hall of Fame third baseman who played his entire career with the Philadelphia Phillies. I just love his hard nosed style of play, the coolness about how he did it and the results, unmatched by any third baseman ever. Yes Brooks Robinson won more Gold Glove Awards, but Schmidt still won 10 and is undoubtedly the greatest offensive third baseman in baseball history.

Great answer...but I think we're just going to agree to disagree on Robinson/Schmidt :)
