Various churches are allowing some people who are openly homosexual to become members of clergy, a practice which was unheard of decades ago.
As accessibility to knowledge in general via the internet becomes more widespread, I think it'll become easier for people to rethink their commitment to religious belief, and I would hope more people would explore these different viewpoints.
So many people are so devoted to the notion that there absolutely, positively must be a God, a heaven and hell, various other concepts presented in various holy texts. I think too few people consider, what if these really do NOT exist? Further, people mold their lives around their belief systems, restricting their enjoyment of life. Bacon is actually pretty tasty, but certain religions forbid its consumption, and some will never know the crispy taste of bacon (or if they dare to go against their doctrine, they'll feel guilty and be compelled to atone for their "sin'). Just a tiny example, but when you get into restricting personal liberties, where religions think that because they have a notion that their God rules over all humanity, and then try to impose that belief on others, that really grinds my gears.
Though a lot of fundamental religion disbelieves the theory of evolution, I certainly hope that humanity will evolve (heh) beyond religion, at the very least beyond the evils it brings.

Also, think about what conservatives are able to say about Reverend Wright, or even "Crazy Jimmy Carter" in public on large television shows and campaign stops without fear, but even moderates are not able to say about Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson.
