There was an Indian named squanto (sp?) who became friend with the Pilgrims and taught them to live off the land, how to fish, plant crops, cut wood etc. The pilgrims were thankful to the Indians for helping them learn to survive and the first harvest was very good and they had a feast, in appreciation of the Indians and they celebrated for 3 days.
Many people think this was the first Thanksgiving and in a way it was, however..Thanksgiving didn't truly become a holiday until whenever Abraham Lincoln made it one. Maybe the 1800s?
