Who is the most versatile player in the NBA ever?

For me it is Magic Johnson, why at 6’9, he is so good in the point guard position. He is also a very capable sniper that can easily help him make the grade in the shooting guard position. With his sound overall basketball skills and good heft, he can easily make the grade as a small forward of a power forward position. And last but not the least he can play the center position sparingly with his good enough height. But since he is crowded with great players during his time, he is limited and confined to playing the point guard position where he is most comfortable inflicting damage on their opponents on the court.

I guess I am going to make it unanimous. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, old number 32. I worked with a guy, Mike Smith who played on the same high school team as Johnson and he said he was just awesome. Even in high school he switched positions depending on whether his team was defending or had the ball. When he played at Michigan State, he teamed with Greg Kelser to bring them the National Championship with a victory over Larry Bird and his Indiana State team. After joining the Los Angeles Lakers they became a dynasty. Earvin played point at 6'9" tall, but was equally adept at moving to either forward position as needed. When Jabbar was injured, he even played center defensively, and surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly played extremely well. Magic scored when he wanted and made some of the most fantastic passes I have ever seen. During his career he averaged 19 points and 11 assists per game. His shooting percentage from the field was 52% and his free throw shooting percentage nearly 85%. He also appeared in 12 All Star games; eleven of the consecutively. Along with playing on 5 NBA championship teams, he was selected league MVP 3 times and awarded 1st team All NBA 9 times.

Before seeing your answer I said to myself, "Magic Johnson". He started his career as a point guard at 6' 9". What some people may forget is he started at center replacing the injuredKareem Abdul-Jabbar in the last game of the 1980 NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers. Magic scored 42 points, had 15 rebounds, seven assists and three steals. He became the first rookie to win the Finals MVP Award. The Lakers won the game and the championship. Magic retired following his announcement of being HIV positive but came back a few years later. He was bigger, stronger, and probably lost a few steps, so he played a lot of power forward late in his career. He could shoot, pound the boards, ran the fast break and even developed the baby sky hook as a low post. Magic was definitely one of the best all around players the NBA has ever seen.
