M$If you mean a sort of cumulative fame among all people who have lived, I would say Buddha. Most people are Asian and every Asian has heard of Buddha. I don't think there is any actual dispute that he was a real person either. Most Westerners have at least heard of him as well, at least in modern times.
If you want to count google hits, Obama is way ahead of Jesus and Buddha. And virtually all of the Obama hits are actually about President Obama.

M$I don't think you have the definition of "famous" understood, @safiqlislam. The main meaning of "Famous" is "1. Well or widely known"
He is "popular" than all but not "Famous" to all like "Bush".
And we can be pretty sure that while Obama's fame will diminish as the years pass, even if he were to become a great iconic figure like Lincoln or Churchill, the name and story of Jesus will be just as well known to people in a hundred years time as now.
And if "all time" means the past as well, not many people in the world even knew of Obama a couple of years ago. :)
I'm pretty sure the all-time top 3 most known names in the world would be Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed.
I'm not sure who they'd be if you only looked at non-religious figures!

M$First of all Christianity is the biggest religion in terms of followers by a large margin, and secondly, people who are not Christians have still mostly heard of Jesus, just as people that are not Muslims have heard of Mohammed.
They might not know a lot about them, and have quite an inaccurate view of them, but at least they've heard the name and have a vague idea of who they were.
People who are so disconnected with the rest of the world that they have not even heard of Christianity or Jesus are also disconnected enough that they won't know most of the other people you'd propose as candidates for "most famous" either.
I thought the Beatles were bigger than Jesus.
Good choice but other religion are not know the Jesus. So I think he is not most famous for all time.

M$yeah , I pretty much agree. But truly it doesn't really matter if he existed anyway.
Things he apparently said are pretty awesome(ie: sermon on the mount) , they pretty much contradict all of the rubbish spouted by right-wing bigot-homophobes etc.
There is a little bit of extra biblical evidence, most specifically the Jewish historian Josephus. Some people dispute the authenticity, but on the whole scholars accept it. Josephus doesn't say a lot about Jesus, certainly not going into things that would matter for the Christain faith.

On the whole non-Christian historians who're interested in the period accept that there was a real historical person called Jesus, who taught many of the things that are attributed to him, and was the founder of a new religious movement. Though they would consider a good deal of the standard Christian story of Jesus to be myth that developed around the real historical person.
or Michael Jackson if he did'nt

M$I saw somewhere else that 40% of total population of the world are yet illiterate. As illiterate so they can not sign their name. I you can not expect the knownity from them about Hitlar.
But it is a good choice also.
Just because they are illiterate doesn't mean that they don't know about Hitler.
As for the most recognizable coperate symbol that is easily Coca Cola.

M$No, that's just not true. Most people in the world have at least vaguely heard of Christianity but they don't know the details or who supposedly started it.
And to you albanian, you cannot say 'most' people in the 'world' because Christianity is very well-known around the world although we do have a lot of denominations.
Who says that? Muslims are know him? We know about prophet esa (A:) there are no name with jesus in any holy book of our. In islamic view prophet esa is wrongly know as jesus to you. (Please don't mind, I am not debating with you about this.)
So may you info little bit incorrect.
Thanks

Hello there safi!
Whatever you'd say, you still recognize Jesus as a prophet, only we differ in language. You said it.

M$Most everyone in India would have heard of Obama.
They listen to radio even if illiterate.
That's also where they would have heard of Moither Theresa, if they have in fact heard of her, but I'm not so sure that they have.
Oh, everyone in India knows who Mother Theresa was. I doubt they know Michael Jackson or Obama. Only people with TV or Internet know MJ or Obama.
May be, but obviously not more than jesus,MJ,Obama.

In my opinion, Its God. Whoever or whatever God is, in whatever religion, i believe every person on this great planet can identify with God in one way or another. Now bearing there is no physical proof that God is a person, and your question is referring to a person, and ALL TIME, hmmmm..... okay, Jesus and Hitler. With Jesus taking the "most famous" crown.
Of course, any answer is a total matter of opinion in regards to who chooses who, so it is difficult to surmise the most popular due to different religions, geography, and so on.
see above

M$It just occured to me that King Tut could fall in along with other populars
Queen Elizabeth, while passed by President Obama, is still a contender for top fame. She is known to everyone in the Commonwealth plus a lot of others and in fact has been the Queen for all of most peoples lives. And she has traveled a lot and always makes the news when she does.
Although Queen Elizabeth's stats may be diluted as she is often referred to as 'The Queen' and not as 'Queen Elizabeth' Which is one of the many problems in using Google search results as a way of ranking fame.
That google list is out of date. Here's a new winner:
Results 1 - 10 of about 38,500,000 for obama. (0.21 seconds)
There's only
Results 1 - 10 of about 34,300,000 for queen definition. (0.11 seconds) and that's all queens, Queen Elizabeth gets half that.
As for John Smith, that page left out the quotes and got everyone name either smith or john or the words themselves
Results 1 - 10 of about 887,000 for "john smith" definition. (0.27 seconds)
I'd say Oprah Winfrey. Just because.. anyone would know her.. I'm not saying some person who made history; or shared music, win a war, influence a nation. Not Michael Jackson, not Michael Jordan, not Shakespeare or anyone else that's good. Just because.. we don't see the real person.
Oprah, I would think that we see the real famous her. Somehow that's what I think.

M$He is currently 67 years old and still going. He is still selling out all of the venues he books again and again. Likewise it has been reported that he is the most successful song writer in the history of music. It is virtually inarguable that he was part of what could only be defined as the most successful popular music group of all time (The Beatles). He has gone from being just Paul McCartney to being "Sir Paul McCartney"
and on November 16th of this year the United States Library of Congress awarded him the Gershwin Award for Popular Song. A quote from Librarian of Congress James H. Billington.
~quote
It is hard to think of another performer and composer who has had a more indelible and transformative effect on popular song and music of several different genres than Paul McCartney,"

M$The Beatles (including Paul McCartney) were mostly responsible for introducing the western world to Transcendental Meditation a practice they were introduced to in 1967 by the guru himself Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who remained the adviser to the band an Paul McCartney until his death in 2008

I would say this is enough to say that a large portion of the Indian subcontinent is at the very least familiar with the name Paul McCartney and most likely knew and know exactly who this worldwide icon of music is.
No way, almost nobody in Asia with possibly the exception of Japan know about Paul McCartney.
The first person on the list is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Michael Hart explains that Prophet Muhammad was "supremely successful" in both the religious and secular realms. He also writes that Muhammad's role in the development of Islam is even more influential than Jesus's collaboration in the development of Christianity.

M$Influential is not the same as famous, even if you believe that book is a reasonable assessment.
Your information definitely right. I know that, this book always on my table.
But I don't think he is more famous than michael jackson or Obama or bush tough I am also a muslim boy.
Thanks
safi
I gratefully acknowledge your enlightening comments. They've indeed enriched my understanding.
I fully agree with the distinction between "famous" and "influential". In fact, Prophets (peace be upon them all) never had an aim other than to guide mankind to the Path of God. Fame or other worldly gains was never on their agenda, as expressed in these verses of the Quran : "Follow them; they seek no reward from you; they're on the right path" (36:21). "We seek no reward from you nor gratitude" (76:9).
And God promised to the Prophet Muhammad, "Magniloquent indeed is your nature" (68:4). "And We have heightened you in remembrance among people" (94:4).
And I am in full agreement with "albanian" when he says : "even if you believe that book is a reasonable assessment." In fact, the judgment of any human may be biased or flawed, which is why I prefer not to rely on "conscience" or "goodwill" as the sole driving force in life. I rather prefer to follow "this is the Book, wherein in Guidance without doubt" (2:2), "remedy for the heart" (10:57) and "Guidance and Mercy for the believers" (27:77, 31:3, 28:43, 45:20, 6:154, 7:203, 12:111, 16:64, 16:89).
Thanks and best regards.

Your answer is flawed because pretty much all Chinese people know American figures such as Obama, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan etc...., and these figures are also known around the world. as a Chinese American raised in China I know this for certain. While not necessarily everyone in the world know about Mao Zedong or Lao Zi.
