FC Porto have been Portuguese champions for the last four years. They are still 7 short of Benfica's overall record of 31 championships, however. These two clubs, along with Sporting Lisbon, have monopolised Portuguese football down through the years, accounting for 73 of the 75 league championships. Only two other clubs (Belenenses in 1946, and Boavista in 2001) have interrupted this dominance.

Porto won the Portugal Liga in the 2008-09 season with 70 points, 4 points ahead of the second place team Sporting CP. Porto's record was 21 wins, 7 draws, and 2 losses.
