If you are going strictly by statistics then the best tight end in the NFL this year is the Dallas Cowboys’ Jason Witten. Witten is far and away leading the league in receptions and yards by a tight end. Of course an awful lot of his stats are due to the fact that the Cowboys don’t really have many options through the air and they are now relying on a quarterback in Jon Kitna who is not real familiar with the weapons they do have. A quarterback like that is prone to dump it to his tight end more.
As far as historically? Witten has been a good tight end for a long time, but I don’t know if he’s the kind of talent that will eventually be mentioned in the same breath as Hall of Fameers.
