Who is the best player offensively in Major League Baseball? And who is the best Pitcher also?

Tip for best answer: M$0.75
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For best offensive player in the league in 2009, I used the OPS rating, which is on base percentage plus slugigng percentage. On base percentage is number of times on base divided by number of plate appearances and slugging percentage is total bases divided by official at bats. A single is one total base, a double is two, triple is three and home run is four. Albert Pujols lead the league in this category, so he gets my vote for best offensive player in the league.

For the best pitcher, I was thinking starting pitcher and used earned run average, quality start percentage, whip (walks and hits per innings pitched) , strikeouts per 9 innings and walks per nine innings.
Doing that I narrowed it down to three.

Zack Greinke 2.16 ERA, 79% quality starts, 1.07 WHIP, 9.54 K's/9, 4.75 bb/9

Chris Carpenter 2.24 ERA, 79% quality starts, 1.01 WHIP, 6.75 K's/9, 3.74 bb/9

Tim Lincecum 2.48 ERA, 81% quality starts, 1.05 WHIP, 10.42 K's/9, 3.84 bb/9

The statistics are very close in all categories, but since Lincecum has won back to back Cy Young Awards, I give him the nod for 2009.

It's a hard debate for me between Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.

The best hitter and best pitcher can be decided in many different ways. You have to factor in way to many different stats for there to be a clear cut winner... I can give you what the top 5 hitters and pitchers probably are though...

Hitters - Not in order Pitchers - Not in order

1. Adrian Gonzalez - SD 1. Tim Lincecum - SF
2. Albert Pujols - STL 2. Adam Wainright - STL
3. Dustin Pedroia - BOS 3. Josh Beckett - BOS
4. Joe Mauer - MIN 4. CC Sabathia - NYY
5. Mark Texiera - NYY 5. Zack Grienke - KC
