Who is the best Coach in NFL history?

Answers are not limited to the Super Bowl era, so coaches like Vince Lombardi, George Halas, and Paul Brown are all included in the discussion. Please give some reasons as to why you think they are the greatest coach in history. Take into account influences on the game, drafting abilities, how hands on they actually were as a coach, winning percentage in the playoffs, Super Bowl/NFL Championships, and the coaching "tree" that they may have spawned that is still coaching in the game today. Feel free to answer in multiple parts too. Thanks for taking the time to answer this one!

Sometimes the most obvious answer is the correct one, and in my book you simply can’t claim anyone is a better career head coach than Vince Lombardi. The man took the Green Bay Packers and helped revolutionize both the team and the sport in general. Lombardi took over a Packers team that had won just two games the season he arrived, and made an immediate five game improvement and was named coach of the year in his rookie season.

In his second season, Lombardi took his team to the NFL Championship game and while they lost that game, they would win the next two. That’s comparable to Jim Schwartz coming in and taking the Detroit Lions to the Superbowl this coming season, and then winning it in 2012, and 2013. Somehow I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Of course one of his claims to being the greatest coach of all time is that the trophy awarded to the Superbowl champion is named after Lombardi. Even though there are some coaches whose offensive or defensive game plans that have changed the game in certain ways, Lombardi is the best coach in NFL history thanks to what he was able to get his teams to do.

There is no doubt that the best NFL coach of all-time is Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers. His hands down for the honor since his winning traditions in the past is now a living legacy in the sports. He made great accomplishments by guiding Green Bay Packers to the pinnacle of the sports during his tenure as coach. The Packers amassed a whopping 5 NFL titles under his tutelage.

Paul Brown is also worth mentioning of his greatness as a coach in the league as well. The Cleveland Browns and the Cincinatti Bengals were his brainchild. He guided the Browns to three NFL championships and only had one losing season throughout his career as a coach. He then led the Bengals to three playoffs appearances.
Third on the list is probably Don Shula. He is the winningest coach in the NFL and won two Super Bowls for the Miami Dolphins.

I am torn between two all time great coaches; the first being Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys and the second being Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers. Both of these greats built their teams into dynasties that lasted for years. Vince's Green Bay Packers were victorious in the first two Super Bowls, while Landry's Cowboys won in 1972 and 1978. Then I think about this a little longer and I have to throw Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers with his 4 victories into the mix. Oh wow then there is Bill Walsh with 3 and Joe Gibbs with three and others with 2. But in the end I come back to Vince Lombardi who was winning championships long before there was a Super bowl. Not only did he win, but he built character in those who played for him, so my vote goes to VINCE LOMBARDI. Love him or hate him, he was the best.
