Of course this assumes that you hold Google to be the all knowing oracle. As a soccer fan I am more familiar with Mr. Messi. Kobe who?

You are dead right @runghen23. Don't look further @opher; Lionel Messi is the most spectacular football player in the world today. Football is the most watched and revered sport on the planet. NBA basketball is peanuts compared to the world wide football expansion. The FIFA World Cup is the greatest single sport event in the world, only surpassed by the Olympic Games. From 6.500 million people in the world... ¿How many could have access to a TV? .... ¿3.500... 4.500 million? Saving 300 million US Americans from that equation you still got your hands full of 4.000 million + world wide audience that is following football like crazy.
Basketball only matters to the US market. It is not widespread around the world as football does. Kobe Bryant is well known everywhere, but is not that famous outside the US borders. Michael Schumacher the Formula one champion (who was retired and recently came back) is more famous than Kobe Bryant, and also richer. Tiger Woods also is more famous than Kobe Bryant.
Now the big surprise, Lionel Messi, although famous than Kobe, is not that rich. Usually Football salaries are not that big, most big players like Messi got 6, 8 or 10 million salary per year. In this regard US American athletes (NFL, NBA, etc) dance around football players. But Messi is an idol in India, Russia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, China, Korea, Vietnam, Italy, Rumania, Poland, Spain, England, Germany, Israel, Sweden, Egypt, Iran, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroun, Argelia, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil and of course Argentina, his home country...
..and for this Messi could easily surpass Kobe by getting more and better millionaire endorsements in the long term. Fame is out of the question. Go to Kuala Lumpur and see if Kobe's got the cult following that Messi have?
Now as for athleticism, perhaps Kobe is more athletic than Messi, that's fore sure. Basketball is more physical demanding than football. Kobe is being very kind with his words, but this is not necessarily the truth. You need to remember that Messi was once a sick young boy that suffered from growth hormone deficiency, an illness that was just remedied a few years ago. So, his health was against him for many years, not an athletic image you could rely on.
