Father Christmas is also known as Old Father Christmas, Sir Christmas, and Lord Christmas. He originally had no association with gifts or children, and was simply known as a a spirit of good will. Later on Father Christmas was combined with the Catholic Church's Saint Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas (Nicholas of Myra) was known for secretly putting coins in childrens' shoes at night. This is where the idea of Santa Claus, and his gift bringing came from.

Santa Claus is actually derived from the Dutch word Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas was the Dutch personification of the Christmas Spirit. Now most people interchange the names Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Santa Clause as all being the same person.

originally it was a dutch story, the dutch tradition has been altered in america to be a little more kid friendly. In Holland they still have the original tradition which actually happens on December 5th. Where Santa come in riding a horse (not reindeer) kids put carrots in their wooden shoes for the horse to eat and then santa puts presents in the shoes. There is a really sick twist to this story. Santa has midget black Morish helpers who will take the bad kids away in a burlap sack and drag them off to Spain where Santa has his workshop and the kids will have to spend the year making toys for other kids. A little worse than the lump of coal! The association with Jesus' birth is something recent, traditionally the dates are not celebrated on the same day.

The stories got mixed based on the geographic location, The flying reindeer are said to stem from pagan holidays in siberia where reindeers are native, people would eat the amanita muscara mushrooms and have hallucinations, probably where the flying part came from.

Love the hallucinagenic mushroom story, thats funny LOL. Great combination of historic fables there, its like Chinese whispers, starts off as one thing and ends up completely different. Thats time for you, it distorts everything. That is why I wanted to get lots of different feedback, its fascinating. PS I live in Spain, I've never seen any bad kids making toys! LOL

According to the popular view Santa Claus myth owes its origin to St. Nicholas, Archibishop of Myra in Turkey. Everything written about St.NIcholas is based on legends. The designation Santa Claus may owe its origin to the word Sinterklaas, a corruption of the Dutch terms for Saint Nicholas. Historically and Biblically, Santa Claus has nothing in common with Jesus Christ.
The Bible says that we should "love truth" and "speaking the truth in our heart". Telling children that Santa is the bearer of presents at Christmas may seem to be innocent fun, but is it right or wise to decive little children, even if one's intentions are not bad? Do you not find it ironic that an occasion that is supposedly meant to honor Jesus becomes a time to deceive children?
