Ethan is one of the "others". Ben Linus sent Ethan to the crash site to pretend to be one of the survivors of Flight 815 in order to gather information about the survivors. He ends up kidnapping Claire who was pregnant at the time. He also hung Charlie from a tree and almost killed him. (He is also Tom Cruise's first cousin.)
