David was probably best known for playing Bill in Quentin Taranino's two "Kill Bill" films. That, however, was recent - he'd been in the arts (not just acting) for decades before that.
If you visit his Web site's Art Bio section, you'll find that Carradine was, before acting, a sculptor. Oddly enough, his father was also a sculptor before turning to acting. David also drew and painted. He also studied music when he was in college in San Francisco, though his bio states that he wasn't very good at that.
Oh, and he was in the Army, too, according to that same bio page.
Anyway - he got into acting after all that. According to the Acting Bio section of his site, he became well known when he played Caine in "Kung Fu." Later, he did the same character in "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues." And, of course, he's very well known for the more-recent work in the "Kill Bill" films.
However, he was in 118 films, 32 plays, and 27 TV movies, so he did quite a bit of acting before he died in Thailand on today.
Also, the last link, which goes to E! Online, reports that David's supposed to appear in an upcoming episode of "Mental" on FOX, but the powers that be are trying to decide if they should go ahead and air this or not.
