Who is considered the top MMA fighter in the world right now?

I am extremely new to the sport and know very little about it so I guess I am wondering if there are weight classes like in boxing, or is the sport just a giant free-for-all where someone can get into the ring with someone else twice their size. Having said that, who is the top ‘’ranked’’ MMA fighter in the United States right now? Do they have championship matches with months of buildup like in boxing or are there tournaments with multiple rounds to determine who is the top ranked fighter?

I'm also new to the sport and had to do some reasearch to come up with an answer for you. There are various weight classes, just like in boxing. The weight classes are batomweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. The rankings I got were from June 22 and based upon approximate odds rankings after a major MMA event. Having said that here were the top ranked fighters in each weight class.

Heavyweight: Fedor Emelianenko, record of 31-1-1
Light heavyweight: Shogun Rua current UFC champion
Middleweight: Anderson Silva, record 22-4-0
Welterweight: Georges St Pierre, record 15-2-0
Lightweight: BJ Penn, record 11-4-1
Featherweight: Jose Aldo, WEC Champion
Bantomweight: Dominick Cruz, WEC Champion

How would one determine the overall best out of these? I would pick the person with the best record, which is heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, with only one loss in 33 matches.
