There's actually not a 'better' side so far. Both triads and Yakuza have their own set of challenges, and they appear to be quite balanced. Personally, I wouldn't like to miss out on either side, and I would play them both. You can switch between the two regularly while playing. As you complete missions, every 2-3 missions you get a choice between the two.
Switching regularly is highly advisable, as this allows you to build up loyalty on both factions. As soon as you progress beyond level 4, you can't switch any more.
