Who is a good Manager ? Should he be nice to his team or he be extra loyal to the employer ? What if there is conflict of interest ?

Tip for best answer: M$0.14
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've always thought that a good manager is primarily a "bozo buffer".

They are there to buffer the idiocy coming from upper management. They are also there to mediate the performance of their team TO upper management.

As a Manager your job security lies with keeping those above you happy. If I employ you to manage people I expect results that will advance and make the Company money. You have to be nice to the people that work for you but you also have to let them be aware that you have a responsibility to see the work is done. And you have to know when and where to put your foot down and let them know what you expect of them or they can be replaced. If I hire you and the results or quota is not met I don't care how well the people below you like you.

You gotta take care of your peoples. In other words, loyalty to the team comes first. Then, loyalty to the employer. Morale within an organization is so important. Keep each other on the up and up. Keep it positive. If there is a conflict of interest, start by dealing with it on a one on one basis with discussion. If it's not resolved, then bring in a third person, and go up the chain if needed. Loyalty to the organization is good too, however sometimes they don't pay so much attention to the day to day balance (morale) of the organization that the manager is responsible for as a team leader.

The Ideal Manager is capable of performing all necessary functions related to effectiveness and efficiency in the short term, and long term. However, conflict exists between the short term and long term, and effectiveness and efficiency. A hummer is effective--it can go almost anywhere, but it is terribly inefficient and requires a lot more gas. An organization, as well as its managers, must be mindful of these conflicting, but necessary needs. So the ideal manager is utopian, and does not exist. That's why good management comes from a complementary team.

The difference between a manger and leader is "integration"; a leader is capable or aligning his/her bosses above and employees below. A good leader is thumb. The thumb is the only digit that can interact with all the other fingers. The thumb is the most important digit because it makes the fingers into a hand. A leader makes individuals into a complementary team.
