Who invented the New Years novelty glasses?

They were invented in 1990 by Richard Sclafani, together with his friend Peter Cicero. They sold half a million pairs of the glasses in 2000, which was the peak in business for them. The advent of 2010 actually did make them consider the design, and on January 1 2009 they announced they would retire the novelty glasses. According to Sclafani: ""It doesn't look very good for 2010. You wind up with a '1' in front of one of your eyes". Competition and aesthetic challenges forced them to retire the glasses.
