It's unknown who first put the argyle pattern on a shirt, but the pattern's been around since the 1500's. It was the tartan pattern of Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland. They also used them as foot coverings, the original argyle socks. These socks entered American fashion with golfers of the 1920's. Around the 1940's and 50's, people began to knit the argyle pattern into their sweaters, vests, and hats.
