Dr Percy Spencer invented the microwave oven. It began as a radar related research project in 1946. He was self-taught engineer with the Raytheon Corporation. When he was testing a vacuum tube he called a magnetron, a candy bar in his pocket melted. Spencer continued experimenting and placed some popcorn kernels near the tube and watched them crack, sputter and pop. He even tried it with an egg, but it exploded, as the internal temperature cooked.

The first microwave, as we know it, was called a "Radarange" and was housed in refrigerator-sized cabinets. The first counter top model came around in 1967 and cost just under $500!

LOL! Regarding the discovery of microwaves, I stand corrected. However, I continue to stand by my belief in addressing questions specifically as asked.

However in many countries the term Mircowave is actually a synonym for Microwave Oven... So in this case the question was accurately answered.

In clarification of your comment. Dr Percy Spencer most certainly did not discover microwaves 1946.. as they had previously been measured by Hertz in 1882 confirming Maxwell's theory.. which again was based on earlier work by Faraday

Interesting point. However, since there's no opportunity to verify the asker's intended meaning, the best course is to address the question as stated, and then to follow up with disambiguation if you believe it's an issue.

I voted "No Best Answer" because no answer accurately addressed ledzephead75's question, which is, "Who invented microwaves?" The correct answer is that microwaves weren't invented; they were discovered. Dr. Percy Spencer is credited with the discovery in 1946.

You can then improve your answer by giving some history about their application, which may also clear up some confusion on the part of the asker.

The microwave oven was, in fact, a byproduct of other technological developments. No one set out to change the way in which we cook our food. It all began in 1946 at Raytheon Corporation. Dr. Perry Spencer, a genius and self taught electronics engineer, was touring one of his labs. He stopped in front of the magnetron, the power tube that was responsible for radar. Much to his surprise, the candy bar in his pocket had melted!

A single experiment

Dr. Spencer was intrigued about what had happened to his candy bar. And so he decided to try another experiment. He placed corn kernels next to the magnetron, and they began to pop and sputter. This experiment alone convinced Dr. Spencer that there was something remarkable about the power of the magnetron on food. He did one more experiment, this time on an egg, which produced it sizzling and fried. The microwave was born.
