This is actually something I inquired about. Ok, first let me start off by saying there are two types of 4G. One is LTE which is Long Term Evolution and the other is Mobile WiMax also known as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. Sprint is the only provider that uses Wimax. Verizon, AT-T, and T-Mobile all use LTE. For awhile now a few of these companies have claimed to have 4G speed, but in actuality they have not had this capability. (This might make things more clear: 4G operates at speeds of 100+ mb/sec. 3G at its best operates at 2 mb/sec. Verizon’s projected “4G” launch is to operate at 5 – 12 mb/sec. So basically they are all just cleverly marketed versions of 3G.) You won’t see the true 4G operation until further into this year, if that. All four companies set the launch of their 4G for 2011, but it will take awhile for them to reach full capacity. I guess we will still have to wait a little while longer to experience 4G.

At the current time, Sprint is the only network that works with 4G capabilities. Sprint’s 4G network utilizes their WiMAX standard. T-Mobile is currently upgrading their 3G network to support HSPA+ and when that is done, it will be capable of 4G speeds up to 21 Mbps. Phone Scoop tested this by using the Sprint USB stick and a 3G/4G Overdrive and two T-Mobile USB sticks (WebConnect stick up to 7.2 Mbps speeds and a WebConnect Rocket stick up to 21 Mbps). The tests were performed at six different locations throughout Philadelphia, PA.

According to Sprint, by using their 4G network, they can deliver up speeds up to ten times faster download speeds than 3G networks.

There technically is an official definition of 3G, but the term 4G is really just a marketing term so far. A network that claims it is 3G must consistently deliver speeds of over 144 kilobits per second, while moving. Even though that the term 4G technically has no real meaning, it is used to describe newer, incompatible networks which follow 3G.

Hello,
Currently Verizon has the fastest 4G Network in the cell phone industry which is 50Mbps. As forAT&T, its 4G is not scheduled to be released for sale until this year. Truthfully, there really is not a predetermined way to gauge which network is the fastest. There are many variables that must be considered including where in the world the call is actually placed. It also depends on if the customer is able to receive a proper connection at the time that they are utilizing their phone. A person can use the same phone in different areas and not receive the same reception hence why it is hard to determine which carrier is actually the fastest. Each carrier also uses their own technology which means they have different metrics in which to be measured.
