Why are the traditions of Protestant churches so different? Where can I read about the history of Protestant churches?

The different Protestant churches were founded by charismatic leaders. Nevertheless Protestantism in the strict sense of the word is the movement led by a group of cities who in 1529 signed a protestation against an Edict that forbade Lutheran teachings within the Holy Roman Empire. From then on, the word Protestant in German speaking areas still refers to churches promoting the Lutheran faith in contrast to Reformed churches. Thus Protestantism refers to any of the Christian religious groups of Western European origin that broke and fought against the Roman Catholic Church as a result of the works of the German religious scholar Martin Luther and of John Calvin, founder of what is known today as the Calvinist movement.
