Mongolia has been occupied by nomads and other tribes since the start of recorded history, the first on record being the Xiongnu tribe. The next major inhabitants were the Göktürks, who ruled from roughly 300bc to 700bc. In more recent history the name Mongolia was adopted by Genghis Khan's "Mongol Empire" in 1206 a.d.
