Who founded Amazon.com?
Did Jeff Bezos set up this online retailer? Did he work as a financial analyst in computer science at D.E Shaw & Co. before founding Amazon.com?

The short answers to your questions are yes and yes. Amazon.com was founded originally by Jeff Bezos and the site was officially launched in 1995. Initially it was called “Cadabra”, but eventually changed because it sounded a bit too much like “cadaver”. Bezos had left a job as a Vice President at the Wall Street firm D.E. Shaw in 1994 with the idea of figuring out which products might sell well online. Bezos did his research and narrowed his list down to five key opportunities - (CDs, computer hardware, computer software, videos and books. He launched Amazon with a primary focus on books while also selling some complimentary products. The business quickly took off and moved from being run out of Bezos’ garage to setting up shop in Seattle. From there, Amazon has steadily grown into the dominant player in the online retail industry.
