You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

With music streaming and pirating so prominent nowadays, people have access to a wider selection of music. People who 20 years ago would have been content with music on the radio can discover a deep seeded love for dubstep, post punk, black metal, or variety of other genres. Then their support and money will go to artists in these genres, instead of mainstream top 40 musicians. Music is much more accessible these days, and people are free to develop a very specific taste. Before, people relied on radio and magazines to develop their musical tastes for them because they had no other ways to get music, or even hear about it for the most part.
Even people who do make it into the accepted mainstream of music just will find it difficult to maintain a steady level of fame and riches. People are less and less willing to support record sales when they can easily pirate the music for free. If an album doesn't sell well, the record company won't spend as much to promote that artist's next album since there's no payoff in it for them. The lack of promotion means less people will know the album is even coming out, or that the musician is touring, which means less recognition and sales. It's a slippery slope.
With shows like American Idol and Britain's Got Talent, singers are proving to be completely disposable. The public loves them for one television, and then promptly forgets about them when the next season starts up. Only a few will manage to make a successful, long term career out of these shows.
While the internet might provide many of us with a lot of fantastic music we would've never heard about twenty years ago, it's also the reason the world will never rally around a single band or musician again. We're too diverse and splintered for that anymore, and the record companies know they have better ways to make money nowadays than to try and create a global superstar.
