I definitely don't think the best artist is necessarily the most popular artist. I'm a country music fan, and although two of the most popular artists this year were Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, I'm going to say the best artist was my personal favorite, Trace Adkins. He's finally getting some of the recognition I think he's long deserved and recording better songs than ever. I've seen him live several times, and he puts on a great show. Being a good live performer is a big part of the equation in my view, not just recording quality albums.
