Who do you think is the best swingman in the NBA ever?

Swingman is a player that usually occupies the small forward position. He is usually the team’s main offensive threat. They are capable of slashing through the defense of their opponents with sheer creativity and finesse in driving to the hoops with a variety of cross-dribble, cross over, spins and fakes. They are also deadly shooters and this makes them formidable on the court. Some of the finest swingmen are Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter and many more… But who do you is the best swingman the NBA had produced ever?

I'll give you my top 2 and then let the arguments begin. First on my list is Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics. Bird averaged 24.3 points, 10 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He shot an amazing 49.6% (considering he was an outside shooter, remarkable), 37.6% on three points field goals and almost 89% from the free throw line. He was league MVP 3 times, 9 time all NBA first team, 3 time NBA Champion, 2 time all defensive second team, NBA rookie of the year, Hall of Famer, Olympic Gold Medalist and one of the greatest 50 players in NBA history.

Second on my list is Julius Erving of the Philadelphia 76ers. He had his best days in the ABA and would be number 1 on this list if just talking about ABA players, but Dr J. was still a great NBA player. He was an 11 time All Star, 5 time All NBA First Team, league MVP, won a championship in 1983, averaged 22 points, 6.7 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game, shot 50.7%, scored over 30,000 professional points (NBA and ABA combined), member of the Hall of Fame and one of the 50 greatest players of all time.

Others that I feel deserve considerable consideration are Elgin Baylor and John Havlicek and Rick Barry.

My understanding of a swingman is a player who is capable of playing both the shooting guard and small forward position. Size is not really important as long as they can handle the responsibilities of the position.

Although you could define Kobe Bryant as a swingman, his primary position is Guard. My personal opinion of a swingman would be John Havlicek who played for the Boston Celtics in the 1960s and 70s. He came off the bench and moved to which ever of the two positions was required. There are other older players that fit this role such as Joe Caldwell who played for the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks, and Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers. Anyway, when I pick the best swingman ever in the NBA, I need to go with John Havlicek. He defined the role and was great at it. He was the premier sixth man and enshrined as a member of the Naismith Hall of Fame in 1984.
