Who do you feel are the Top 5 Starting Pitchers in the National League?

Obviously a few of the top five are givens, what with Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum and this year Ubaldo Jimenez are going to be in the top five, but I’d like to see how you rank them, and would like to see who you put in the rest of that list. After those three there are some very good pitchers, but I’m not sure there is one or two other guys who are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack, so I’d like to see what others come up with.

There are several pitchers in the National League having superb seasons at the halfway point of the 2010 season. Here are my top five.

1. Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado Rockies: Jimenez has a 15-1 record, with a 2.20 earned run average. He has struck out 113 and allowed just 87 hits in 127 innings pitched.
2. Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins: Johnson has a 9-3 record, with an earned run average of 1.70. He has 123 strikeouts and allowed only 89 hits in 122 innings.
3. Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals: Wainright has a 13-5 record with a 2.11 earned run average. In 136 1/3 innings pitched, he's allowed only 102 hits and has struck out 127.
4. Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies: Halladay has 10 wins and an earned run average of 2.33. He pitched a perfect game against the Florida Marlins and has 119 strikeouts and just 19 walks in 139 innings.
5. Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals: Gacia has an impressive 2.17 earned run average and 8 wins. He has struck out 80 in 99 2/3 innings.

Right now number one on that list has to be Ubaldo Jimenez. He is pitching out of his mind so far this season. He is currently leading the NL in wins(11), ERA(0.93), and WHIP(0.93). He’s also in the top 6 in pretty much every other major pitching category including strikeouts(6th-78), complete games(3rd-2), and IP(4th-87.1). In a league that loves its numbers, Ubaldo is putting up some impressive ones.

I think Roy Halladay is in second place right now. When he’s starting, you can be sure your bullpen is going to be getting some rest. Halladay has gone at least 7 innings in 10 of his 12 starts, and he’s never pitched less than 5 2/3 innings this whole year. He pitched 5 complete games, with 4 shutouts, and he leads the national league in IP with 93.0. Not only is he a workhorse, but he manages to perform at an incredibly high level. His ERA is 3rd in the NL at 2.03, and he has an impressive record of 8 wins and only 3 losses. If the Phillies catch Atlanta at the top of their division, Roy Halladay is going to be a big reason why.

The rest of my top 5 rounds out with:

3: Adam Wainwright (8-3, 2.05 ERA, 85 K)

4: Tim Lincecum (5-2, 3.20 ERA, 89 K)

5: Mike Pelfrey (8-1, 2.39 ERA, 52 K)

Lincecum still needs to make my list, even though he hasn’t had as great of a start to his year as some other pitchers, but I can’t in good conscience put him farther down. Mike Pelfrey is on fire right now, but I’m not convinced that he’s going to stay that way. I can guarantee that this list would be different if you ask this same question in September.
