Who do you consider a great writer and why?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My vote for a great writer would go to Kurt Vonnegut, mainly because of his ability to deal with complex ideas, philosophies and issues in a humane, humorous and incredibly readable way. From his surrealist depictions of the fire-bombing of Dresden during World War II (in Slaughterhouse-Five) to his brilliant hypothesis about the "actual" purpose of human culture (in The Sirens of Titan), no one was better at conveying the tragedy and wonder of our existence as Vonnegut.

Ernest Hemingway. He wrote about his life, which was extremely exotic and out of the ordinary. I like his writing because it takes me to a world so different from mine.

Martin Heidegger because he is able to use such dense language. It is remarkable the amount of information he is able to cram onto one page. This does however make his books take a long time to read.

Frank Herbert.

In his early years he wrote an average of two stories a week. Besides his pure sci-fi works being epic in imagination and scope, he also managed to write a satire on religion and dupe millions of people (read: Tom Cruise clones) into actually believing in that religion.

Wasn't that actually L. Ron Hubbard who started the psuedo-religion you're talking about?

My vote is for Jane Austen.
Her mastery of the English language is amazing. I also think she is often overlooked because she is a woman and because of the subject-matter of her books. But she is a brilliant, hilarious writer.

Neil Gaiman is an incredible writer. His creativity seems to know no bounds, and he is very well-versed in classic literature, mythology and folklore. He is also very diverse, which to me, means that I think he could write about a box of cereal and still manage to entrance an audience.
